In a true swords-to-ploughshares story, a huge former ammunitions factory was converted in 1999 into a major arts center. The Zentrum für Kunst und Medien-technologie (ZKM) (Center for Art and Media Technology), houses several museums, galleries, and workshops. The Museum für Neue Kunst (Contemporary Art), exhibits works from private collections. The emphasis is on American and European art from the 1960s to the present. The Media Museum is the world’s first interactive museum and unites media art with painting, sculpture, and photography. It requires active participation by the visitor to illustrate the impact of modern technologies on art. Admission is Euro 5.10 for the Media Museum, Euro 4.10 for the Contemporary Art Museum, or Euro 7.70 for both.
